Welcome to Picnic Blanket

Hello! I’m Katie, the designer, maker, and founder of Picnic Blanket Jewellery.

Raised in the English countryside, I studied English Literature at University and graduated in 2018.

After graduation I chose the safe option and took the first office job that was semi-relevant to my degree; writing bids for grounds maintenance, and then subsequently, construction companies (yes I’m serious!) but this was not it. I quietly spent the following years trying to think up business ideas, hobbies, or side hustles that could transport me away from my unfulfilling career path.

In 2020, I found myself furloughed, living up in Cumbria with my love, and yes, to pass the time I started making beaded jewellery! And I haven’t looked back since.

Over the next couple of years my mediums, and processes have evolved a lot. But it’s been my love of beads that have been at the heart of everything I’ve made. In fact, every single piece of jewellery has been made and designed by me in my little Lancashire studio.

Fast forward to 2023 and I am now pursuing my dream of becoming a fully-fledged lampwork bead artist (seriously, I’ve dreamt of this for three years now!). It’s going to take many many years to master but I now feel I understand when people say that they have found their calling. I know it sounds cliche but I really believe it in my heart. It is with the dream of being a true artist and the vision of making Picnic Blanket even more unique and original that I’m incorporating my own designed and handcrafted one-of-a-kind beads into my jewellery.

Every day, I seek to make beautiful, whimsical jewellery that transports you to a different place. A daydream.

The Process

The Art of Lampwork

Each individual glass bead takes me up to 15 minutes to delicately form by hand in the flame, reaching temperatures of up to 800 degrees celsius, before then heading to the kiln to soak for around 6 hours in the warmth to ensure strength and longevity. The beads are then washed by hand to release them from the mandrel, cleaned, reamed and polished, before finding their way to the beading mat to be made into something dreamy for you to wear.

The Studio

where the magic happens...

So, whether you are brand new here or have been with me on this journey for a while, thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting my small business. Your love and support truly mean the world to me and just know how grateful I am to you for letting me make my dreams come true! I feel like I'm dreaming. I hope this all lasts forever.

Love,

Katie
